Top tips for keeping pets cool in the summer heat
During the hot summer months, it’s important to help keep your pets cool. Especially during heatwaves and on extra sunny days, pets are at risk of heatstroke which can be fatal. We have put together a list of top tips for you and your pet to follow for the Summer.
Stay Hydrated
Make sure that all animals have access to fresh water throughout the day. If you are heading out on a walk, make sure to take plenty of water with you with a travel bottle or bowl.
Reduce Daily Walks
Walk your dog in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are lower. A good tip to remember – if you cannot comfortably hold the palm of your hand to pavement then it is probably too hot for your dog’s paw. If the temperature is too high it’s ok to skip a walk and stay home!
Grooming
Keep on top of your animal’s coat by regularly brushing them at home and attending regular grooming appointments to trim long coats.
Dogs Die In Hot Cars
NEVER leave your pet in a hot car alone for any length of time. If you spot a dog in distress in a car, call 999.
Shade Shelters
Create shade shelters for your animals to escape the hot sun. This can be inside your house or out in the garden or yard. Remember to keep these shelters well ventilated for air flow.
Cooling Down
Provide your pet with something cold to lie down on. This can be a damp towel , a cooling gel mat or even a cold tile for small animals. These could be stored in your shade shelters. Or provide your pet with a cool shower or supervised paddling pool!
Frozen Treats
Give your pet a frozen treat to cool them down. This enrichment activity will also keep them entertained indoors without exerting too much energy. Try freezing their favourite treats in a block of ice, or grab a pet safe ice cream from one of our stores!
