As we move into the colder months, it’s time to help prepare pond fish for the winter season. As the external temperature drops, so does the temperature of the pond, and subsequently the body temperature of the fish. During this period the fish are less active and need less protein in their diets.

Pond fish are cold-blooded which means their body temperature is controlled by their surroundings. A drop in temperature will cause a lack of appetite and slowing of their metabolism. It is important to take care of the health of your fish. Whilst they may still eat food provided it may not be correctly digested which can lead to health complications.

Wheatgerm sticks have been developed especially to transition pond fish through the colder months until the temperature gets so cold that there is no need to feed them at all.

Follow these easy steps to transition your pond fish over to Wheatgerm Sticks:

• We recommend monitoring the water temperature of the pond with a thermometer. As the temperature drops to 15°C, a high protein diet is no longer required.
• Between 15°C – 10°C, start to mix their regular feed with Wheatgerm sticks.
• Once the temperature drops to 10°C and below, switch completely to Wheatgerm Sticks.

It is advisable not to feed your fish once the water temperature falls below 8°C due to the slowing of their natural metabolism.
