Smallholding Success: Feeding, Fencing & Farming Through Late Spring

As the vibrant hues of late spring paint the landscape, smallholders find themselves in a bustling season of growth and renewal. This period is crucial for maintaining a thriving smallholding, requiring careful attention to livestock feeding, land maintenance, and water management. In this guide, we’ll explore practical strategies to ensure your smallholding flourishes during this pivotal time.

Livestock Feeding: Seasonal Nutrition for Cattle, Goats, Sheep, and Pigs

Feeding livestock in late spring is all about balancing their nutritional needs with the bounty of the season. As pastures become lush, it’s essential to adjust feed to prevent over-nutrition while ensuring animals receive all necessary nutrients.

Goats

Goats thrive on a varied diet. In late spring, their diet should primarily consist of fresh pasture, supplemented with hay and a mineral-rich feed to support their health and milk production. Consider using feeders that minimise waste and contamination, ensuring your goats get the most out of their meals.

Take a look at the goat products we supply.

Sheep

Sheep benefit from rotational grazing, which allows pastures to recover and reduces parasite loads. Supplement their diet with a high-quality sheep feed, particularly for pregnant or lactating ewes. This ensures they receive adequate protein and energy to support their health and productivity.

We stock a variety of products for not only sheep, but alpaca and llama, too.

Pigs

Pigs enjoy rooting in the fresh spring soil, but it’s important to provide a balanced diet to complement foraging. A mix of grains, vegetables, and a specialised pig feed will meet their nutritional needs. Ensure water is always available, as pigs are prone to dehydration.

Browse our Pig products.

Cattle

Cattle require careful management in late spring to make the most of lush pastures. Monitor their grazing to prevent bloat while ensuring they have access to high-quality forage. Supplement their diet with a balanced cattle feed, especially for growing calves or nursing cows, to provide essential minerals and energy. Always ensure a constant supply of fresh, clean water.
Explore our range of cattle products.

Land Maintenance: Rotational Grazing

Rotational grazing is a sustainable practice that enhances pasture quality and animal health. By moving livestock between paddocks, you allow grass to recover, promoting a healthy ecosystem.

Plan Paddocks: Divide your land into several paddocks and rotate animals every few days.

Monitor Growth: Keep an eye on grass growth and adjust grazing patterns accordingly.

Maintain Fences: Ensure fences are secure to prevent livestock from straying and to protect new growth.

Water Management: Troughs and Hydration

Adequate hydration is vital for livestock health, especially in warmer weather. Ensure all animals have access to clean, fresh water at all times.

Invest in Quality Troughs: Durable, easy-to-clean troughs are essential.

Regular Checks: Inspect water sources daily to prevent contamination and ensure functionality.

Consider Automatic Systems: Automatic waterers can save time and ensure a consistent water supply.

Product Spotlight: Feed, Buckets, Tools

Equipping your smallholding with the right tools and supplies is crucial for efficiency and animal welfare. Here are some essentials:

Garden Preparation: The Foundation of a Thriving Spring Garden

As the chill of winter recedes and the promise of spring begins to blossom, it’s the perfect time to breathe new life into your garden and outdoor spaces. Spring is not just a season; it’s a revival. With the right spring garden prep, your garden can flourish, becoming a sanctuary for both you and local wildlife. Let’s explore how you can achieve this with essential tools, wildlife feeders, and outdoor essentials.

Get Your Garden Ready for Spring

Cleaning Tools and Equipment

Before you start planting, it’s crucial to ensure your tools are in top condition. Clean and sharpen your gardening tools to make your tasks easier and more efficient. Well-maintained tools not only save time but also help prevent the spread of disease among plants.

Weeding and Soil Preparation

Spring is synonymous with new growth, and that includes weeds. Begin by removing any weeds to give your plants the best chance to thrive. Once the ground is clear, focus on soil preparation. Enrich your soil with compost or manure to improve its texture and nutrient content. This step is vital for a healthy garden, as it ensures your plants have the nutrients they need to grow.

Explore our range of compost and manure here.

Feeding Wildlife: Creating a Haven for Local Fauna

Bird Feeders and Seed Mixes

Supporting local wildlife can transform your garden into a lively ecosystem. Installing bird feeders is an excellent way to attract a variety of bird species. Choose feeders that are easy to clean and fill, ensuring you can maintain them with minimal effort. Choose seed mixes that cater to different bird species to maximise your garden’s appeal.

Insect Habitats

Insects play a crucial role in pollination and maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Consider adding insect habitats to your garden to encourage beneficial insects like bees and ladybirds. These habitats provide shelter and breeding grounds, helping to sustain a healthy garden environment.

Outdoor Living: Enhancing Your Garden’s Appeal

Compost and Manure

A well-composted garden is a thriving garden. Compost and manure are essential for enriching your soil, improving its structure, and providing vital nutrients. Regularly adding these organic materials can significantly boost plant health and productivity.

Spring Into the Saddle: Preparing Your Horse and Stable for a New Season

As winter fades and the first signs of spring emerge, equestrians everywhere prepare for a new season of riding. Transitioning your horse from winter stabling to spring turnout requires careful planning and attention to detail.

Grooming & Shedding: Preparing for the Season

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your horse’s grooming routine. As temperatures rise, horses begin to shed their winter coats, and regular grooming becomes essential. A well-stocked grooming kit is crucial for maintaining your horse’s coat and overall health.

Essential Grooming Supplies

Regular grooming not only keeps your horse looking its best but also helps you check for any skin issues or injuries that may have developed over the winter months.

Feed & Nutrition: Adjusting Diets for New Workloads

As your horse’s workload changes with the season, so should its diet. Spring is a time when horses often increase their activity levels, requiring adjustments to their nutritional intake.

Nutritional Adjustments

Keyflow Pink Mash: Supports gut health, especially important when transitioning to fresh spring grass.

Gradually introduce any new feeds to avoid digestive upsets. Monitor your horse’s condition and energy levels, adjusting feed quantities as needed to maintain optimal health and performance.

Stable Refresh: Ensuring Comfort and Hygiene

A clean and comfortable stable is essential for your horse’s well-being. As spring arrives, it’s time to refresh bedding and perform a thorough stable clean.

Bedding Options

Aubiose Supreme Hemp Bedding: Absorbs liquids efficiently, reducing odours and mucking out time.

Regular cleaning and pest control measures will help maintain a healthy environment, preventing the build-up of harmful bacteria and parasites.

Tack Check: Maintaining and Replacing Gear

Spring is an excellent time to inspect your tack for wear and tear. Proper maintenance ensures your gear remains safe and comfortable for both you and your horse.

Leather Care Essentials

NAF Leather Saddle Soap: Cleans and protects leather, extending the life of your tack.

Essential Yard Maintenance Tips for a Cleaner, Safer Stable

Stable cleanliness isn’t glamorous, but it’s one of those things you notice immediately when it slips. Strong smells, damp beds, flies hanging around, it all adds up quickly. Keeping on top of yard maintenance throughout the year isn’t just about appearances either. It affects horse comfort, respiratory health, safety underfoot, and how long everyday jobs take.

For yard managers, owners, riders, and small holders alike, a clean, organised yard makes daily routines easier and far less stressful.

Equestrian Bedding Essentials: Choosing the Right Bedding for Comfort & Cleanliness

Equestrian bedding choice often comes down to routine, budget, and the individual horse, but it has a huge impact on how clean a stable stay.

Straw is still widely used and does the job well if managed properly. It’s warm, relatively cheap, and easy to source, but it does need regular changing and can quickly smell if wet patches are left behind.

Wood shavings, particularly dust-extracted options, are a firm favourite on many yards. They’re absorbent, easy to muck out, and tend to suit horses with sensitive airways.

Pelleted bedding is popular with people who like a tidy, compact bed. Once it’s set up, it absorbs moisture well and can reduce waste over time.

Alternative bedding, such as hemp or paper-based products, is becoming more common. These options appeal to those looking for high absorbency with a more sustainable angle.

Take a look at our range of bedding.

Daily & Weekly Stable Hygiene: Mucking Out, Tools & Drainage

There’s no real shortcut when it comes to getting rid of any muck. Daily removal of droppings and wet bedding keeps ammonia levels down and helps protect horses’ lungs, especially during winter when stables are shut up more.

Good tools matter more than people think. A solid fork that suits your bedding type and a proper yard brush can save time and effort over the long run.

Weekly jobs often get pushed back, but they’re worth doing. Disinfecting stable walls, doors, and floors helps control bacteria and lingering smells. Drainage should also be checked regularly; standing water and damp patches are an open invitation for problems.

Pest Control: Keeping Flies, Rodents & Parasites in Check

Pests are part of yard life, but they don’t have to take over. Flies thrive around manure and damp areas, so regular muck heap management makes a noticeable difference. Traps and sprays help, especially during warmer months.

Rodents tend to appear where feed is easily accessible. Secure storage, regular checks, and dealing with issues early can prevent a small problem from turning into a bigger one.

A generally clean yard is also less attractive to parasites, making day-to-day hygiene one of the most effective control methods.

Yard Equipment: Practical Tools That Make Life Easier

The right equipment keeps jobs moving and reduces the risk of accidents. Buckets, wheelbarrows, gloves, and yard brushes are everyday essentials, but having enough of them is important, as is keeping them in good condition.

Storage is often overlooked. Tools left lying around are trip hazards, especially in busy yards. Simple storage solutions help keep everything where it should be and make mornings run more smoothly.

Final Thoughts

A tidy, well-managed yard doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built from small, consistent habits – choosing the right bedding, sticking to cleaning routines, staying on top of pests, and using the right tools for the job.

Festive Feasts: Safe Christmas Foods (and Treats) Your Pet Can Enjoy

Christmas is a time for food, family, and fun. As you settle in for a festive feast, it’s hard not to notice your pet eyeing your plate, hoping for a taste. It’s easy to want to share, but not everything on your plate is safe for your furry friend. Some foods that are fine for us can be harmful or even toxic to pets, so it’s important to know which ones to avoid and which ones are okay to share.

This guide will walk you through some Christmas foods that are safe for your pets (in moderation), plus some festive treats from us that will keep them feeling special, too!

Foods You Can Share with Your Pet (in Moderation)

There is some Christmas food for dogs and cats that they can enjoy, but remember, moderation is key. Too much of anything can upset their stomach, even if it’s a safe food. Here’s a rundown of what your pet can have:

1. Turkey

Plain turkey is a great choice for pets. It’s packed with protein and not too hard on the stomach. Just make sure it’s plain—no seasoning, skin, or bones. Those things can cause digestive issues or even more serious health problems. Stick to a small portion to keep it safe.

2. Vegetables

A few vegetables commonly found on your Christmas dinner plate are actually good for pets. Carrots, peas, and green beans are all safe when served plain (no butter, no salt). These veggies are a low-calorie, nutritious snack your pet will love. Just remember to serve them in small portions!

3. Potatoes

Mashed or sweet potatoes are safe for pets, as long as there’s no butter, garlic, or seasoning added. Sweet potatoes are especially good for digestion because they’re high in fibre. Keep the portions small and stick to the basic stuff.

4. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is another good option for pets. It’s great for digestion because it’s high in fibre. Just make sure to use plain, pure pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, which has added sugar and spices). You can mix it in with their regular food for a festive touch.

Festive Foods to Avoid

While you’re enjoying your Christmas dinner, there are a few foods that should stay far away from your pet. These can be toxic or just too hard on their system. Here are the big no-no’s:

1. Chocolate

Chocolate is super dangerous for pets, especially dogs. It contains theobromine, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, and even seizures. Dark chocolate is the worst, so keep any chocolate goodies far out of reach.

2. Stuffing

Stuffing might smell amazing, but it’s not safe for pets. It often contains onions or garlic, both of which are toxic to animals. Even if there’s no onion in your stuffing, the extra fat, salt, and butter can cause upset tummies. Best to keep that one to yourself.

3. Mince Pies & Christmas Pudding

Mince pies and Christmas pudding are festive treats for humans but dangerous for pets. They often contain raisins, which are toxic to dogs and can lead to kidney failure. Plus, the alcohol in Christmas pudding can make pets really sick. Definitely don’t share these with your pet.

4. Cooked Bones

If you’ve ever wondered what can dogs eat at Christmas, it might be a good reminder that cooked bones are very dangerous, as they can splinter and cause serious internal injuries. If you want to give them a bone, make sure they’re only ever raw.

5. Gravy

Gravy’s full of salt and fat, which isn’t ideal for your pet’s stomach. It can lead to dehydration and digestive issues. It’s best to save the gravy for yourself and not offer it to your pet.

There are many Christmas treats for pets available on our site, so make sure to stock up!

Seasonal Treat Alternatives for Pets

So, what can you give your pet to join in on the festive fun? We have a great range of festive dog treats, festive cat treats, and everyday treats that will keep your furry friend feeling special without the risk.

1. Advent Calendars

Give your pet their very own advent calendar! Specially made for dogs and cats, these calendars have a treat behind each door to make the countdown to Christmas even more exciting.

2. Festive-Flavoured Chews and Biscuits

Treat your pet to some holiday-flavoured chews and biscuits! From turkey and cranberry to cinnamon and apple, there are plenty of festive flavours that are safe for pets and will have them wagging their tails.

3. Premium Wet/Dry Foods

If you want to give your pet an extra special Christmas meal, We have premium wet and dry foods perfect for a festive dinner. Whether it’s turkey or chicken, they’ll love a special Christmas meal that’s healthy and tasty.

4. Treat Stocking Fillers

Fill your pet’s stocking with safe, holiday-themed treats! From chew toys to tasty snacks, there’s plenty to choose from to make their Christmas just as fun as yours.

Tips for Treating Without Overfeeding

It’s easy to go overboard with treats during the holidays, but too many goodies can lead to weight gain and upset tummies. Here are a few tips to keep things balanced:

Use treats for training or enrichment: Instead of giving treats all the time, use them for training or to keep your pet entertained. Puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys are great for keeping them busy while they enjoy their holiday treats.

Treats as stocking stuffers: Treats are great for spoiling your pet, but remember, they’re a snack, not a meal. Treats should be a small part of their day, not a replacement for their regular food.

Monitor food intake: Keep track of how many treats your pet is getting, especially if they’re also getting extra meals or special food. Overfeeding can lead to health problems down the road.

Prepare Your Garden Birds for Autumn & Winter

As we move into Autumn, the days start to feel shorter, and the air carries a bit more bite. Leaves fall, gardens quite down, and wild birds begin their seasonal shift. With fewer insects around and less natural food available, your garden can quickly become an essential stop for local birds trying to stay warm and fed.

By putting out the right kind of food and offering a few extras like water and shelter, you’ll not only help birds get through the colder months — you’ll likely enjoy a front-row seat to some wonderful wildlife activity too. At Gladwells, we’ve got some Autumn bird feeding tips (and handy products) to help make your outdoor space bird-friendly this season.

Why Feeding in Autumn Is So Important

Autumn is a preparation phase for birds — they’re building up energy reserves ahead of winter’s full arrival. While you might notice them becoming more active around feeders, what they’re really doing is stockpiling energy.

With colder weather approaching, it’s worth switching to higher-energy foods that help birds maintain body heat. And once you start feeding garden birds in winter weather regularly, they’ll know they can rely on your garden as a safe, consistent food source.

Preparing Your Horse for the Changing Seasons: Autumn Essentials Guide

As summer fades, the darker skies start to appear earlier, and the days start cooling off, it’s worth thinking about how the change in season will affect your horse. Colder mornings, wetter weather, and shorter days tend to shift their needs. Getting ahead of those changes now can save you from problems later on.

Here’s a simple breakdown of things to keep in mind for your equestrian animals this autumn.

Take a Look at Their Rugs

When night temps drop below 10°C, that light summer rug probably isn’t enough anymore. A waterproof or midweight turnout rug for your horse is a better fit for this time of year. It’ll keep them warm, but not too warm.

Layering can be really useful too. Try using a light rug underneath a waterproof one, so you can adjust things more easily if the weather flips midday.

And don’t forget to check under the rug now and then. Feel around the shoulders and chest. You want the area to feel warm and dry. If it’s sweaty, the rug might be too heavy.

Keep Joints Moving Smoothly

With damp air and more time inside, some horses start to show signs of stiffness, this doesn’t just apply to older horse, but also ones still in regular work. If they’re not moving around as much, you might notice they’re not as free in their movement.

Horse joint supplements with MSM, glucosamine, or chondroitin can be useful. A bit of warming liniment before exercise can help them get going, and a cooling gel after can support recovery. If they’re stabled for longer stretches, wraps or stable bandages might help keep their legs comfortable.

Feeding Might Need a Tweak

Once the grass starts to lose quality and turnout is reduced, your horse might need a little extra. Some need more hay, others benefit from conditioning feeds like Baileys Outshine or Dodson & Horrell Build-Up Cubes.

Don’t forget about gut health. Changing feed or forage can unsettle things, so adding a prebiotic like Baileys Digest Plus can help things stay balanced.

And even if it’s cooler, a horse in regular work might still sweat a fair bit. Keep up with electrolytes where needed.

Browse our extensive range of equestrian feeds to find the perfect nutrition for your horse’s autumn needs.

Make the Stable a Nicer Place to Be

With wetter weather ahead, your horse may be spending more time indoors. That means bedding matters more. You’ll want something absorbent and soft that keeps them dry and supported.

Aubiose hemp bedding or Bedmax shavings are solid options. If you’ve got rubber matting down too, even better. It adds comfort and a bit of insulation, which can be really helpful in colder months.

Explore our selection of equestrian bedding to keep your horse comfortable throughout the autumn months.

Mud and Skin Care Go Hand in Hand

Autumn brings more rainy days which in turn cause a lot of mud. Aside from tough walking conditions, mud can bring along health problems such as mud fever if you’re not careful.

Daily grooming really helps. Focus on the legs, especially around the fetlocks and pasterns. Use firm but gentle brushes to get dried mud off without irritating the skin.

It’s a good habit to check for any signs of trouble on your horse, including heat, swelling, or sore spots. Barrier cream can help protect clean, dry legs before turnout. Just make sure that your horse is completely dry after washing.

Get Ahead While It’s Still Easy

Right now, before the worst of the weather arrives, is a great time to stock up on the essentials. Stable bedding, feed, supplements, waterproofs are just a few of the essentials you’ll need for the cold months ahead. You’ll thank yourself later.

Also, get those farrier or vet appointments booked. It’s often harder to coordinate once the season kicks in fully.

Think about what your horse needs. Older horses might want a bit more joint care. Youngsters might find longer stable hours frustrating. If you’re still training or competing, shorter days might mean switching up your routine.

Home dog grooming is about more than washing their coat; it improves health, strengthens the dog-owner bond, and can spot issues before they

become problems. While a professional groomer has a role in tackling mats or complex trims, many day-to-day tasks are easy with simple dog grooming tools. Sometimes it may be difficult to know when or even how to groom your four-legged friend, but getting the right equipment (and treats!) for the job will make it an enjoyable experience for both you and your dog.

We are going to explore the benefits of grooming your dog, what can happen when grooming becomes a less frequent activity, and the products we sell that are perfect for an enjoyable grooming session.

Keep reading to see how you can get a Pawsome deal on your grooming purchases during September!

Why Regularly Grooming Your Dog Pays Off

Shiny, Healthy Dog Coat
Brushing your dog’s coat spreads natural oils, cuts down on shed fur, and helps to highlight to you ticks, lumps, or irritated skin for attention. Lack of brushing can also lead to matted fur, especially if your pup is out in the wet weather or has just had a wash, and could lead to discomfort and the need to seek a professional groomer to get the matted fur gone.

Nails & Paws Sorted
Overgrown nails can pinch paws or scratch floors. A quick trim can make a walk more comfortable for both. On a more serious note, the longer your dogs’ nails, the more prone to injury and long-term health issues. Dogs may alter their posture and gait if their nails are causing discomfort, which can lead to strains on muscles and could cause arthritis, especially in older dogs.

Ear & Eye Maintenance
Keeping these clean fights off infections and keeps vision clear from build-up. Always monitor your dogs eyes for any problems like redness, cloudiness, or discharge, doing so will help catch any issues early on. For their ears, it’s important to keep a close eye on the inside of their ears as dogs with long canals are prone to trapping moisture, dirt and wax which overtime can lead to infections.

Spotting Sneaky Symptoms
Lumps, minor cuts, or odd smells can be found during grooming sessions—easy to miss otherwise. We know our dogs get up to mischief when we aren’t around (and even when we are!), and sometimes its difficult to see if they’ve accidentally hurt themselves. Perhaps they’re a short, long-haired dog and have found their way into a patch of cleavers or burrs, we likely wouldn’t see them without giving them a groom, and these can cause skin irritation and matted fur fairly quickly.

Wet vs Dry Cat Food: Which Is Best for Your Cat?

We always want to feed our feline friends what’s best for them, but sometimes it can be a little overwhelming when you’re faced with many different brands, types of food, and what benefits they have for your cat. From your cat’s hydration levels to finding the best food for your budget, we’ll dive paw-first into what types of cat food you can feed your feline friend, and what the differences are between both wet and dry food, plus a few informed tips to help you make the right decision.

What Is Wet Cat Food?

Wet cat food typically contains between 70 and 80% of water, which is what creates a soft and palatable texture. High moisture levels that you find in wet food is particularly appealing to cats who naturally don’t drink too much during the day. They’ll feel fulfilled by the meal whilst also quenching their thirst

To maintain freshness, you’ll find most wet foods come in a single-serve pouch or tin. The food is also cooked in the packaging it comes in as this preserves all the nutrients your cat requires and creates an irresistible aroma for your cat.

When Wet Food Works Best

We may try our best to keep our cat’s teeth in top condition, but as they get older it may become more difficult. That’s where wet food comes in – a softer texture to chew on, reducing strain on the gums and teeth.

If your cat has any health concerns then the extra hydration from wet food can help. Moisture content that you’ll find in wet food can help support their kidney function and prevent a nasty urinary tract problem. This is particularly important for indoor cats who may not be drinking enough water during the day.

If you’ve got a fussy feline who is very particular about what they’re eating then wet food can work wonders due to its strong scent and variety of different textures. If you’ve seen your cat turn its back on other foods then the appealing scents from wet food may be the best choice.

What Is Dry Cat Food?

Dry food has a much lower moisture content compared to wet, with it making up just 6-10% of the food, many cats thrive on it when they have access to fresh water. This offers your cat a crunchy texture.

Once you’ve opened the dry food, commonly called kibble, you’ll be able to store it for weeks as it keeps its quality when stored properly. This is much different to wet food which requires quick consumption after being opened.

Today especially, there are many premium dry foods that have been scientifically formulated to meet your cats’ nutritional needs, and they are more often than not enriched with added vitamins and joint-supporting ingredients like glucosamine.

Dry Cat Food Benefits

Nutritionally efficient and budget-friendly feeding makes dry food a great option for your pocket, especially for multi-cat households. The price per serving typically costs a lot less than wet food equivalents, but doesn’t lack on nutrients or quality

Convenience factor allows free-feeding schedules where cats can graze throughout the day. This suits cats who prefer multiple small meals rather than set feeding times.

Dental support comes from the crunchy texture, which helps reduce tartar build-up through mechanical action. This, unlike wet food, is a proven way to keep plaque at bay. However, this shouldn’t replace regular veterinary dental care.

Easy storage requires no refrigeration and bags store efficiently in cupboards or pantries. This is especially useful if you have a full fridge, or live a busy lifestyle where adding dry food feeding times to your day is a simple option.

Portion control becomes simpler with dry food, as measuring exact amounts helps with weight management programmes.

Comparing Wet vs Dry Cat Food

Hydration Considerations

Cats evolved from desert animals and naturally have a low thirst drive. Wild cats obtain most moisture from prey, so domestic cats eating only dry food often struggle to drink enough water to compensate.

Wet food’s high water content helps cats meet daily hydration needs naturally. This supports kidney function and reduces the risk of urinary tract issues.

Nutritional Aspects

Both wet and dry cat foods can provide complete, balanced nutrition when you select quality brands. The key lies in reading ingredient lists and choosing age-appropriate options.

Wet food typically contains higher protein levels and fewer carbohydrates, aligning more closely with cats’ natural dietary requirements. Quality dry foods also offer excellent nutrition, though they may contain more plant-based ingredients.

No matter the age of your furry feline, we stock brands that cater to all ages, like Meowing Heads Smitten Kitten for the young ones, and James Wellbeloved Adult for the older cats

Practical Considerations

Cost: Dry food generally offers better value per serving, making it economical for long-term feeding.

Convenience: Dry food excels for storage and feeding flexibility, whilst wet food requires more planning and refrigeration.

Feeding style: Consider your cat’s preferences. Some cats prefer scheduled meals with wet food, others like grazing throughout the day.

Mixed Feeding Approach

Many veterinarians recommend combining wet and dry food to provide benefits from both types. This approach offers hydration from wet food whilst maintaining the convenience and added nutrients of dry food.

Cat Feeding Tips for Mixed Diets

Gradual introduction: If your cat is accustomed to one type, introduce the new food slowly over 7-10 days to prevent digestive upset.

Portion monitoring: Track calories from both food types to prevent overfeeding, which can lead to weight gain.

Timing strategies: Feed wet food at specific meal times (morning and evening) whilst leaving small amounts of dry food available for grazing.

Observe changes: Monitor your cat’s appetite, digestion, and energy levels during any dietary transition.

Choosing the Right Option

The wet vs dry cat food decision should consider your cat’s individual requirements:

Age factors: Kittens need nutrient-dense food for growth, adults require maintenance nutrition, and senior cats may benefit from easily digestible options.

Health considerations: Cats with kidney issues, diabetes, or dental problems may benefit from specific food types.

Lifestyle factors: Indoor cats have different activity levels than outdoor cats, affecting nutritional needs.

Your schedule: Consider time available for feeding routines and food preparation.

Finding Quality Options

Quality wet foods should list meat as the first ingredient and avoid excessive fillers. The best dry foods balance protein, healthy fats, and limited carbohydrates whilst avoiding excessive corn, wheat, or soy.

At Gladwells Pet & Country Stores, we stock carefully selected cat foods from trusted manufacturers. Our range includes options for every life stage and dietary requirement, from kitten formulas to senior cat diets.
